Today was the day that we bought our two little gerbils. We had been looking for a pet that was practical and interesting and after much researching decided that gerbils were for us. We already had a cage waiting for them at home.
The lady at a local pet shop got our boys in specially for us. She had two grey gerbils, one an orange-tan colour and another in a standard gerbil brown. We chose Gadget - one of the greys and Gizmo the tan one. They are around six weeks old.
We visited another pet shop to buy our supplies for them. We got them kitted out with a water bottle, food dish, gerbil muesli, wood shavings and some toys.
On the way home we visited my Grandma, who enjoyed watching them. They were quite shy but kept coming over to investigate us between naps, curled up together. My other grandparents got to meet them this evening. They gave us our first surprise too; Gadget managed to leap onto Nana's hand and out of the cage. He was quickly scooped up and we knew to be more wary about opening the cage, now that they had settled in. This was worthwhile, because later Gadget proved that he could jump high enough to escape unaided. This time however, I knew what to expect and made sure he didn't get out.
They seemed happy with their muesli, tucking in to pieces that they chose from the food dish. The water was another matter, they did not seem interested in the bottle. I'm not sure whether they have used one before, but I'm sure that they will be able to when they are thirsty. They seemed very impressed with a toilet roll tube that we gave them, both of them chewed it enthusiastically.
